Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Carly and I live with my husband, our two-year-old son, and three cats in a little town about 50 minutes east of Toronto, ON. I work two part time jobs as a nurse; one in a long-term care home and the other in a hospital. Recently, I took a temporary full time position on my unit at the hospital so I’m just starting to adjust to working as a full time nurse but I’m confident it’ll be a great learning experience and I’ll be able to further my knowledge, skills, and judgment. I’m a firm believer in eating dessert first and I may have a slight addiction to Starbucks cinnamon dolce lattes.
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
I first started my blog two years ago as a way to document my experiences as being a first time mom. While I was pregnant, I kept a journal of letters to my son Nate, how I was feeling during the pregnancy, any fears I may have had, and my hopes for the future. After Nate was born I was finding it harder and harder to have the time to actually sit down and write. I found that I was able to type out what I was feeling faster than actually using pen and paper. My blog also served as a way for me to document all of the milestones Nate was meeting in his first year of life and how I was finding life after becoming a mom. I wouldn’t say my blog necessarily has one ‘theme’ or ‘purpose.’ It’s just a way for me to communicate, document, and vent about day to day life. I actually never anticipated that anyone would even read my blog but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the small following I’ve gained.
What’s your favorite flooring in your home and why?
We actually just moved into a brand new build home so every type of flooring we have is my current favourite! I love the tiles we chose for our kitchen, bathrooms, and showers, as well as the carpet in the bedrooms and loft space but if I had to choose my absolute favourite, it would be the laminate flooring in our dining room and great room. It’s a gorgeous shade of grey and reminds me of barn board. I love the contemporary look it gives our home but my favourite part about it is how it hides any dirt that might be hanging around the house!
Do you follow any other blogs for inspiration? If so, which ones?
There’s so many amazing blogs I follow for inspiration that it’s hard to narrow it down but I’m currently loving what At Home With Kristyn Cole has been doing lately! She just did a blog post about her ‘Farmhouse Glam Dining Room’ and it’s amazing! I absolutely LOVE the pictures she’s posted. I’m a huge sucker for old farmhouses with a modern update! I’m also a huge fan of Anchored to the East; Mel and Erica are always posting these amazing recipes with the most drool worthy photos and getting a first hand look on the farmhouse renovation Erica and her husband Ben undertook has been amazing as well! I could honestly spend hours on all the bloggers I follow for inspiration but I think I’ll cap it at those two for now! However; I do have to add an Instagram account to my list of inspirational bloggers. I just recently (like in the last two weeks) discovered Out of the Wood Designs and I’m already making a mental note of everything I want her to make me! This little Etsy shop creates some of the cutest hand-made signs I’ve ever seen! The design inspirations are endless!
Can you explain a recent project or post you’ve been working on?
Since we’ve just moved into a new house I guess you could say the whole house has been a project; figuring out where to put everything, how we want each room to look, and what does and doesn’t work here has been a challenge. This house is a completely different layout from our previous home so we’re just trying to go room by room and see what we like and what we don’t. I was really happy with how our family room came to together during Christmas. I was worried that the space would still feel empty since it’s such a large room but I think it came together perfectly and felt so cozy during the holiday season. I wish it was acceptable to keep Christmas trees up all year long!
I should also mention the project my husband, Kurt, undertook a few weeks ago because he did such an awesome job on it! We had a set of four dining room chairs that desperately needed some TLC. One of our cats (Milo) used them as scratching posts when he was a kitten. They were ratty looking and falling a part. After moving into our new house, we decided that we needed to do something with them. Since it was just the seats that were ruined, it didn’t make sense to buy a brand new dining set so Kurt took it upon himself to reupholster them. He’d never done anything like this before and I think we were both worried that they wouldn’t turn out but after a few attempts he got the hang of it and our chairs have never looked better! I was so excited with the final outcome of them! The fabric we chose matches our floors perfectly and it gives the entire dining set a brand new look and feel! I was so proud of him for taking this task on.
